Sulthan Bathery is the largest town in Wayanad and sits on the eastern side, near the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu borders. Roads are gentler than in the western hills, and the town has good hospitals, shops, and restaurants, which makes it a comfortable choice for families. Coffee and pepper estates surround the town, and many homestays offer plantation walks. It is the natural base for Edakkal Caves, Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, and the historic Jain Temple, and the first large town for travellers driving in from Bangalore or Mysore.
